We are seeking two Paralegals to support Legal Services Division, including but not limited to the Constitutional and Aboriginal Law team (CAL), and the Edmonton and Calgary Family and Surrogate Court Litigation team (FASCL). These Paralegals will be responsible to provide a broad range of support to advisory and litigation counsel handling complex legal matters arising from C-92 litigation as well as Litigation related to the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous peoples (UNDRIP). The Paralegals may also be tasked with matters related to other types of litigation involving Indigenous Governing bodies (IGBs) and indigenous issues.
The Paralegals responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
Independently draft and file court documents at all levels of court (Provincial Court, Court of King’s Bench, Court of Appeal, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada)
Assist in drafting and formatting Briefs/Factums and have expertise in procedural requirements for documents being prepared and filed
Manage and organize files and voluminous records in preparation for complex court proceedings
Identify issues on assigned files and conduct legal/topical research
Monitor case law developments and monitor and track judicial consideration of important aboriginal law, and child protection cases involving indigenous issues
Preparation and distribution of regular case law summaries
Create and contribute to legal databases and precedents, including an Annotated Act
Build and maintain a precedent bank of pleadings, legal opinions, filed written arguments
Organize regular meetings, update Trackers, draft Minutes and Action Items
Perform any other administrative duties assigned by Assistant Directors or Directors on the following teams: 1) Constitutional and Aboriginal Law; 2) Calgary FASCL and 3) Edmonton FASCL
Perform various paralegal work related to UNDRIP Litigation matters
Act as back-up paralegals to each other on UNDRIP and Bill C-92 work
Any other paralegal duties as required
The successful candidate will perform high quality work, sometimes under stress and time pressures, while meeting critical deadlines. The ability to proactively handle many tasks with limited instruction and self-prioritize a high-volume workload is vital. The successful candidate will work accurately and promptly applying correct spelling, grammar, and legal terminology, and must have strong writing, research, and technical/computer skills.
Requirements of the position include:
Outstanding attention to detail
A strong knowledge of civil filing procedures and legal citation
A firm foundation of general legal knowledge and paralegal experience
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint)
Experience with legal research, Prolaw, the ARTS program, civil litigation, child protection and aboriginal law paralegal experience will be considered assets.
