As Science North’s Financial Controller you will oversee all aspects of financial management including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, internal control policies and financial risk management. You will also have direct oversight of staff responsible for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, Project Accounting as well as risk and procurement. Position Highlights:
- Leads the financial management of the Centre including budget setting process in consultation with Directors, provides financial support to the Business Affairs Committee/Board
- Leads audit file preparation and ensures accountability for compliance, control, and sound financial management reporting to the audit committee
- Active, respectful and collaborative member of Senior Leadership Team
- Champions sound financial management practices and fiscal responsibility across the organization
- Oversees the day-to-day activities of all financial areas and transactions including those related to general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, benefits administration, job/labour costing, inventory management and control, fixed assets, grant budgeting and reporting
- Evaluates financial reporting systems, accounting procedures and policies; recommends and implements changes to procedures, policies and other financial control functions
- Builds relationships within the direct team and the Senior Leadership Team as well as with stakeholders to understand business operations and achieve alignment in key business decisions and strategies
- Provides financial advice, training, guidance, and support in financial implications of business decisions, preparation of budgets and related activities at all levels of the organization
- Provides financial expertise across the organization on ongoing projects, programs and planning
- Performs/initiates financial analysis and conducts reviews in areas such as forecasting, budgeting, cost reductions, operational performance, and efficiencies of operating units
- Offers guidance and support for project accounting team
- Explores opportunities to improve efficiency and productivity
- Supports new systems or project selection and implementation from a strategic finance and internal control perspective
- Advises on, and develops, systems to track and maximize HST tax credit and exemptions
- Coordinates and prepares financial and regulatory reports required by law including Ministry reporting
- Works cross functionally to maximize financial success of grants, programs, and businesses
- Recruits, selects, trains, and manages the performance of employees
- Actively promotes the organization’s vision, purpose, and core values
- Sets, monitors and evaluates individual and team strategic and operational objectives blend with perf pieced
- Coaches, motivates, and develops team, ensures growth and engagement of team members
- Provides leadership in all financial areas for new and existing business initiatives
- Sets up accounting, payroll, and financial reporting structures to take into consideration funding providers, tax credit requirements, budgeting requirements and cash flow monitoring and analysis
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in in business, accounting, finance, or any related field
- CPA designation or equivalent experience
- 5+ years progressive experience gained at a senior level in the private or public sector
- 3+ years of management or supervisory experience in a related Finance/Accounting role
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment and managing financial implications of very rapid growth
Keys to success:
- Experience in payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable functions
- Sound knowledge of advanced accounting and financial concepts related to Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB), complex payrolls and fund accounting
- Familiarity with provincial agency accountability requirements
- Able to establish credibility, trust and build relationships with people of all levels of an organization
- Proven expertise in financial project management
- Demonstrated ability to effectively deliver high quality work under pressure
- Knowledge of Federal regulations on taxes and reporting
- Extensive experience in creating financial statements and general ledger functions
- Superior skills and experience with accounting software (including advanced administration) and Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel
- Superior organizational, communication (written and verbal), presentation and analytical skills
- Experience in grant reporting considered an asset
