About the Firm
Heer Law specializes in providing intellectual property law, intellectual property litigation, patent agent and trademark agent services. We are an established intellectual property law firm located in downtown Toronto. The firm has experienced strong annual revenue growth over the past 4 years and anticipates that the firm will again double over the next 3 years.
The Role
The ideal candidate will be an associate lawyer with 1 to 4 years of pre-call (summer/articling) and post-call experience in IP law. He or she will work primarily in patent and trademark prosecution, IP agreements and strategic advice, and may have the opportunity to provide some IP litigation support.
Responsibilities
- Preparing provisional and non-provisional utility and design patent applications
- Preparing Canadian trademark applications
- Reporting and preparing responses to office actions in patent, trademark and design applications before CIPO or the USPTO and supervising the prosecution of related applications by foreign associates in other jurisdictions
- Preparing trademark clearance and registrability opinions
- Help with preparing and responding to cease and desist letters, preparing licences or other IP-related commercial agreements, and preparing and filing copyright applications
- Conducting in-person and telephone consultations regarding intellectual property issues
- Taking telephone calls and responding to emails from prospective and existing clients
- Involvement in the firm's marketing activities
Qualifications
- Licensed to practice as a lawyer in Ontario
- 1 to 4 years of pre-call (summer/articling ) and post-call experience
- Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Engineering or Science, preferably Computer Engineering, Computer Science or other degree including computer-related courses
- Registration as a Patent Agent in Canada and/or the United States and/or Registration as a Trademark Agent in Canada is an asset
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Willingness to participate in the firm's marketing activities
- Good work ethic, positive mindset and a team player
